Niagara Falls draws 14 million visitors per year for good reason β the Horseshoe Falls are genuinely one of the natural wonders of the world. But beyond the iconic cascade, Niagara offers the Niagara Parkway (described by Winston Churchill as the prettiest Sunday afternoon drive in the world), world-class wineries, the charming town of Niagara-on-the-Lake, and more activity than most visitors realise.
β Top Attractions at Niagara Falls
The falls are just the beginning β here is everything worth seeing.
Horseshoe Falls (Canadian Falls)
The centrepiece β 57 metres high and 670 metres wide, with the full volume of the Great Lakes flowing over it. The Canadian side offers dramatically better views than the US side. The mist, the roar, and the sheer scale are overwhelming in person. Never gets old.
Hornblower Niagara Cruises (Maid of the Mist)
The iconic boat ride into the mist at the base of the Horseshoe Falls. You'll get completely drenched β the rain ponchos are not adequate. One of Canada's great experiences β the scale only truly registers from the water.
Niagara Parkway & Table Rock
The 56km Niagara Parkway follows the Niagara River from Lake Erie to Lake Ontario β described by Churchill as the prettiest Sunday afternoon drive in the world. Table Rock is the closest viewing point to the crest of the falls β free and spectacular.
Journey Behind the Falls
Tunnels carved into the bedrock behind the Horseshoe Falls let you look through the curtain of water from behind. Surprisingly powerful experience β the vibration and noise inside the rock is extraordinary.
Niagara Wine Country
The Niagara Peninsula produces some of Canada's finest wines β particularly Riesling, Pinot Noir, and the world-famous Icewine. Dozens of wineries along the Niagara Parkway and in Niagara-on-the-Lake offer tours and tastings.
Niagara-on-the-Lake
A perfectly preserved 19th-century town 20km north of the falls β arguably the most beautiful small town in Canada. The Shaw Festival Theatre (world-class), Victorian architecture, wineries, and lakefront setting. A complete contrast to the tourist chaos at the falls.
π Free Things to Do at Niagara Falls
The best of Niagara costs nothing.
Niagara Falls Viewing (Table Rock)
Standing at Table Rock β the closest free viewing point to the Horseshoe Falls β is spectacular and completely free. The illuminations at night and the fireworks (Friday and Sunday in summer) are also free to watch from the parkway.
Niagara Glen Nature Reserve
A dramatic gorge carved by the ancient Niagara River β free hiking trails descend into the gorge past ancient boulders and through forest. One of Ontario's most impressive natural hikes, almost completely unknown to most visitors.
Niagara Parkway Walk
The parkway itself is free to walk or cycle. The riverside path from the falls north toward Niagara-on-the-Lake is beautiful β past whirlpools, historic forts, and vineyards.
π³ Outdoor Activities at Niagara Falls
Beyond the falls, Niagara has excellent outdoor recreation.
Niagara Parkway Cycling
Rent a bike and cycle the 56km Niagara Parkway from the falls to Niagara-on-the-Lake. The route passes vineyards, historic forts, the whirlpool, butterfly conservatory, and lakefront views. One of Ontario's greatest cycling routes.
Niagara Falls Butterfly Conservatory
A large heated conservatory in the botanical gardens with over 2,000 free-flying tropical butterflies from 45 species. Butterflies land on visitors regularly. Excellent for children and genuinely beautiful for all ages.
