How Kanata Scores
What Kanata Actually Feels Like
Kanata is Ottawa's western suburb and its tech capital — Kanata North Business Park is Canada's largest technology cluster outside Toronto's downtown core, housing Shopify, Nokia, Cisco, Ericsson, Mitel, Ciena, and over 500 tech companies employing approximately 30,000 people. The neighbourhood was developed from the 1970s onward and has distinct sub-communities: Stittsville (semi-rural feel, newer builds), Bridlewood (established family area), Morgan's Grant and Beaverbrook (established family). Canadian Tire Centre (Ottawa Senators NHL arena) is located in Kanata. The area is car-dependent but well-designed for families — trail networks, community centres, large lots, and excellent schools. OCDSB (Ottawa-Carleton District School Board) consistently ranks among Ontario's top three school boards and serves Kanata.
Schools in Kanata
Kanata has some of Ottawa's best-rated schools. Earl of March Secondary School and A.Y. Jackson Secondary School serve Kanata and both rank in the top 10% of Ontario high schools. Elementary schools in Kanata consistently score above provincial average. OCDSB's French Immersion program is strong throughout Kanata.
Getting Around from Kanata
Kanata is primarily car-dependent for most residents, but unusually many Kanata residents work in Kanata North itself — making commutes of 5–10 minutes possible for tech workers. Highway 417 (the Queensway) connects Kanata to downtown Ottawa in 25–35 minutes by car. Bus Rapid Transit (OC Transpo BRT) connects Kanata to Tunney's Pasture and downtown via the Transitway. Cycling to Kanata North is possible via NCC pathways for western route users.
What It Costs to Live in Kanata
Kanata offers Ottawa's best combination of school quality and home value. At $920K average detached — significantly lower than Toronto or GTA equivalents with comparable school boards — Kanata provides exceptional family value. Newer communities (Blackstone, Morgan's Grant) have modern builds from $950K–$1.3M. Established areas (Bridlewood, Katimavik) offer 1990s–2000s homes $800K–$1.0M. Tech worker demand keeps prices stable through economic cycles.
Outdoor Life in Kanata
Western Kanata has NCC Greenbelt access — extensive natural areas with hiking and cross-country ski trails.
Extensive NCC pathway network connecting Kanata to the rest of Ottawa's 600+km trail system — world-class cycling infrastructure for a Canadian city.
Kanata's significant protected green space — trails and natural areas within the urban fabric.
One of multiple large community parks in Kanata with sports fields, trails, and playground facilities.
Kanata has good green space but its best trail access is via NCC pathways that connect to Ottawa's extraordinary 600km cycling network.
Safety in Kanata
Kanata is one of Ottawa's safest communities. The tech industry demographic, high homeownership rate, and active community associations contribute to very low crime rates. Ottawa as a whole has a Crime Severity Index of 36 — well below Ontario average — and Kanata is below even that. Extremely safe for families.
Is Kanata Good for Families?
Kanata is one of Canada's best family communities by objective measures. OCDSB top-3 Ontario schools, very safe (Ottawa CSI 36), NCC trail network, large lots, community centres, and the unique advantage of tech industry employment nearby (many parents work in Kanata North, minimizing commute). The main limitation: car-dependent for most daily activities.
Tech industry families who want top OCDSB schools, short commutes within Kanata North, very safe community character, and Ottawa detached homes at $920K — significantly lower than Toronto equivalents with comparable school boards.
Those who need urban walkability and transit, those wanting cultural density and restaurant scenes comparable to downtown Ottawa, or those who find car-dependence unacceptable.
